Why patients come to Barcelona
Many of our English-speaking patients live in Barcelona or elsewhere in Spain and want to be seen by a surgeon who explains everything in their language. Others come from abroad for a specific procedure or for a second opinion before surgery. In both cases what matters is the same: a clear diagnosis, an experienced surgeon and an organised plan.
Dr. Carlos Magriñá has more than 35 years of experience in ear, nose and throat surgery. He trained at the University of Barcelona and did his residency at Vall d’Hebron Hospital, with further training at Mayo Clinic, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, St. Gallen (Switzerland) and Hammersmith Hospital (London). He is a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS), the European Academy of Facial Plastic Surgery (EAFPS) and the Mediterranean Society of Otology and Audiology (MSOA).
How we organise your care
- Contact us by WhatsApp, email or the contact form, in English.
- Video consultation: we review your symptoms, reports and scans, and tell you what is likely to be needed. You can send them by email, as a download link, or on a CD or USB stick.
- Plan: if surgery is advisable, we send you a quote covering the clinic, pre-operative tests and fees, and agree the dates, the tests to do beforehand and an estimate of how long you need to stay.
- In Barcelona: pre-operative consultation and examination, surgery, and the first check-up before you travel.
- Back home: a full report in English for your doctor and follow-up by video when appropriate.
Procedures international patients most often ask about
- Septoplasty and functional rhinoseptoplasty
- Endoscopic sinus surgery and nasal polyps
- Snoring and sleep apnoea surgery
- Otosclerosis surgery (stapedotomy)
- Cholesteatoma and perforated eardrum surgery
- Tonsil and adenoid surgery
- Ventilation tubes (grommets)

Frequently asked questions
Does Dr. Magriñá speak English?
Yes. He trained at Mayo Clinic and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in the United States and sees patients in English every week. Consultations, reports and instructions can all be in English.
Can I have the first consultation online?
Yes. A video consultation with your reports and scans is usually the best first step: we tell you whether surgery is likely to be needed and what tests are missing, so that you only travel once a plan is clear.
How long do I need to stay in Barcelona?
It depends on the procedure. As a guide, about a week for nasal or sinus surgery and 7 to 10 days for ear surgery or tonsillectomy in adults, to allow for the pre-operative visit, surgery and the first check-up before flying. We will give you exact dates for your case.
Will my insurance cover it?
Dr. Magriñá does not work with insurance companies. If your policy reimburses medical costs, as many international health insurers do for treatment abroad, we provide itemised invoices and medical reports in English so you can claim.
Who follows me up after I go home?
Check-ups that need examination are done in Barcelona before you leave. Later follow-up can often be done by video, and we send a full report for your local doctor.
